How
We used the following gems and plugins:
Starling, Workling, Subdomain-fu, RESTful_authentication, open_id_authentication, and the APIs for Github, Lighthouse, Basecamp and Hoptoad.
If you are having issues signing up with OpenID, please ensure that you have configured your openid profile to pass along an email address. We perhaps should have turned off that requirement for the competition, however openid has been tested to work with at least a few providers as long as you pass along an email with your profile.

couldn’t create account sorry
I couldn’t create an account. Tried open id and tried by login/password. Got: “Email can’t be blank Email is too short (minimum is 6 characters) Email should look like an email address.”
As a followup it won’t accept 24 character email address as being one of too short, blank or not looking like an email address.
Attempting to sign up with OpenID causes the process to fail miserably for me. I’m not clear this was ever tested, but I guess that’s about a 1 for usefulness.
